Don't be Dusty

August 17, 2017

When I say dusty I mean lacking glow and full of toxins (for the purposes of this post anyway).  I'm a huge fan of natural beauty products.  What goes on your skin gets into your bloodstream.  Many popular products on the shelves are filled with parabens (a preservative and cancer-causing agent) and other not so great stuff for our hair and skin.  My rule of thumb when buying products that are going on my skin or hair; no parabens, no sodium lauryl sulfate, and no harmful alcohols (ethanol, SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, denatured alcohol, propanol, propyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol).  Here are some of my go to products I use daily.

Coconut Oil

I LOVE coconut oil! I use it on my hair and skin.  After I shower, I slather my whole body in organic, cold-pressed coconut oil.  It absorbs into my skin over night and leaves it super soft in the morning.  I also use it on my face at night with a little bit of tea tree oil.  For some people, it can be great for acne. Coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti fungal properties, which makes it a pimple fighting powerhouse.  For others, it can be a nightmare.  It all depends on your skin.  If you have oily skin, I suggest an oil that's not so heavy like grape seed oil.

Aside from healthy skin and hair, coconut oil is also great for safely whitening your teeth!  Unlike the harsh chemicals found in most teeth whitening kits, the auric acid in coconut oil detoxifies your mouth by sucking toxins out. To whiten and detox, swish about a tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth.  Spit it in the toilet to avoid clogging your sink.  I've been doing this for about a week and I'm already seeing results!

Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant

After learning about the harmful products found in most deodorants, I started searching for more natural options (no parabens or aluminum, which are both carcinogens).  Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant is my favorite so far.  Baking soda and natural plant extracts from chamomile, coriander, and geranium naturally absorb odor.  I also find that even though this is a deodorant and not an antiperspirant, I don't sweat as much as compared to other natural deodorants.  This is most likely due to baking soda's ability to absorb moisture.  I'm still looking for other more natural deodorants.  I'll keep you posted.

Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil

I recently heard about CBD oil and started doing my research.  I'm always down to try a natural product.  What is CBD oil? (I'm glad you asked). It is a compound found in the cannabis plant.  Yes, it's legal; no, you won't get high.  CBD is different from THC, which causes the high associated with marijuana.  CBD is not psychoactive.  It is found in hemp, the least processed form of the cannabis plant. THC attaches to receptors known as CB1.  I'll spare you all the scientific talk.  Just know that these receptors deal with coordination, pain, mood, thinking, appetite, and memory.  CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune system. These receptors have effects on inflammation and pain.  CBD does not directly attach to either, but instead prompts the body to use more of its own cannabinoids.

There are many different uses for CBD oil including treatment for Alzheimer's and treating cancer, but I'm going to focus on the acne fighting benefits.  When we think acne, we think inflammation and over-productive oil glands.  CBD has been found to lower the production of oil and reduce inflammation.  I will definitely be adding this to the natural health store that is my bathroom.
